Engaging Men in Violence Prevention

Violence is preventable. We can't end violence without you. We need you.

Most men are not violent. Most violent acts are committed by men.

Resources

The above video, Masculinity & Engaging Men in Violence Prevention, presented by Dr. Chris Spromberg, PsyD, is a discussion about how we intentionally and unintentionally take away healthy choices and behaviors by limiting our expectations, tools and language. Watch to discover how we can add to the meanings of bravery, care, protection, responsibility and more to encourage good relationships without violence.

BE A MAN Raised in the Shadow of Cowboys, a memoir by Montana author Russell Rowland, is a great read and one that examines masculinity and violence. You can check out a copy from ASPEN, buy it at your local bookstore or find it through Rowland's website.

Russell Rowland was born and raised in Montana, in a family where anger was the only acceptable emotion. As a young man, Rowland struggled with anger management issues, and even found himself in an abusive marriage, something he never expected or wanted. BE A MAN is an attempt to explore Rowland's own history as well as the impact of growing up in a place where men are expected to be self-contained, stoic, and solve their own problems. It took years of therapy for Rowland to get a handle on his anger, and he wants other men (and women!) to understand that asking for help is not a sign of weakness.
